Tax transcript tips for those filing a FAFSA for the 2019-2020 college semesters

6/26/2019

When filling out financial aid applications, students and families may need to get tax information to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is available to use with the 2019‒2020 FAFSA Form. This tool is the fastest, most accurate way to input tax return information into the FAFSA form.

Students and parents who are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool can access it from within the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Here is some information for applicants to help get tax return information for the FAFSA form.

  • Applicants filing a 2019-20 FAFSA must use data from their 2017 tax returns.

  • Taxpayers should always keep a copy of their tax return. Whether they keep it electronically or on paper, they should keep it in a secure place.

Here are some options for taxpayers who did not keep a copy of their tax return. They can:

  • Access the tax software product used to prepare and file their 2017 return. They may be able to access their account to download and print a copy.

  • Contact the tax preparer or provider who filed their 2017 return.

  • Download their tax transcript at Get Transcript Online. They should remember to review the identity authentication requirements for Secure Access before attempting to register.

  • Use Get Transcript by Mail. The IRS will mail a transcript to the address on their return within five to 10 days.

  • Call the IRS’s automated line at 800-908-9946 to order a transcript by mail.

  • Taxpayers who filed an amended tax return, Form 1040X, should use the adjusted gross income and earned income listed on their revised tax return.

Finally, here’s some information about getting alternative documentation for IDR applications.

  • IRS Data Retrieval plan applicants must submit alternative documentation of income.

  • The applicants submit this documentation to their federal loan servicers after completing and submitting the online IDR application.

  • The process for submitting the alternative documentation of income is explained to borrowers as part of the online IDR application.

  • Alternative documentation of income usually consists of copies of pay stubs or most recently filed tax returns.

Cash In On Summertime Tax Savings

6/24/2019

Summer is usually the time for relaxing, but it can also be a time for tax savings, especially if you're still reeling from an unexpectedly large tax bill in April. Here are five timely tips:

  • Rent out your vacation home. Do you own a getaway? If you rent out a vacation home part of the time, you may be entitled to deductions like other landlords. This includes the rental-related portion of mortgage interest, property taxes, repairs, utilities, insurance, etc. Keep in mind, if your personal use exceeds certain limits, you can't deduct a loss.

  • Send young kids to camp. Who's watching the kids while school's out for summer? Depending on your situation, you may be able to claim a Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit for the cost of sending children under age 13 to summer day camp. However, the cost of overnight camp doesn't qualify for the credit.

  • Bring your child to work. If you have an older child looking for employment this summer, hire them to work for your business. Reasonable wages are deductible by the business and your child will likely owe little tax, if any, on the earnings. Plus, they may be eligible for other employee benefits.

  • Take a business trip. Spend some time seeing a different city this summer while you're on a business trip. When you travel for business, you can generally deduct expenses - including airfare, lodging and 50 percent of the cost of meals - attributable to the business portion of the trip. But you must spend more time on business matters while you're away than you do on sightseeing or other personal activities.

  • Schedule a meeting. Finally, arrange a tax projection meeting well before year-end, when it's often too late to save money. You can figure out if the steps you're taking now will help you avoid a large tax bill at the end of the year. Call today to make an appointment.

Taxpayers who still haven’t filed their 2018 tax return should do so ASAP

6/21/2019

Picture

While the federal income tax-filing deadline has passed for most people, some taxpayers did not file an extension and still have not filed their tax returns. These taxpayers should file ASAP. They should do so even if they can’t pay to avoid potential penalties and interest, which can continue to add up quickly.

Here are some things taxpayers in this situation should know:

  • Penalties and interest are only added on unfiled returns if the taxpayer did not pay taxes by the April deadline. Taxpayers who did not file and owe tax should file a tax return and pay as much as they are able to now. If they cannot pay the full amount, they should learn about payment options. These can reduce possible penalties and interest added to the amount the taxpayer owes.

  • IRS Free File is available on IRS.gov through October 15.

  • Some taxpayers may have extra time to file their tax returns and pay any taxes due. These include:
      o Some disaster victims
o Military service members and eligible support
         personnel in combat zones
o U.S. citizens and resident aliens who live and work
outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico

  • If a return is filed more than 60 days after the April due date, the minimum penalty is either $210 or 100 percent of the unpaid tax, whichever is less. Therefore, if the tax due is $210 or less, the penalty is equal to the tax amount due. If the tax due is more than $210, the penalty is at least $210.

  • The IRS provided penalty relief for certain taxpayers whose 2018 federal income tax withholding and estimated tax payments fell short of their total tax liability for the year.

  • Other taxpayers filing after the deadline may also qualify for penalty relief. Those who are charged a penalty may contact the IRS and explain why they were unable to file and pay by the due date.

  • Taxpayers who have a history of filing and paying on time often qualify for first-time penalty abatement.

There is no penalty for filing late if a refund is due.

Replacing Tax Breaks for Your Growing Children

6/18/2019

Picture
Your kids are getting older. Before you know it they'll be dating, driving and entering college (if they aren't already!). Tax breaks drop dramatically as your children grow up, but you may be able to offset the losses with some timely tax planning. Consider the following tax events based on the age of your child:

  • Age 13: No more dependent day care credit. The maximum annual credit for the cost of caring for your children while you and your spouse work, is generally $600 for one child and $1,200 for two or more children. But the credit is only available for children under age 13.

Tax move: Now that your child is a teenager, hire him or her to work at your business. Typically, the child will owe little or no income tax on the wages, and might even be able to claim an exemption from withholding.

  • Age 17: Child Tax Credit (CTC) no longer available. With the CTC you receive a $2,000 credit ($1,400 of which is refundable) for each child. Unfortunately, the credit disappears when the child reaches age 17. Remember, a tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of your taxes due, so as each child reaches 17, your taxes will go up by the full amount of the previously claimed credit.

Tax move: Claim a nonrefundable $500 credit for a dependent who isn't a qualifying child for the CTC. Typically, this is available to parents of high school seniors and college students.

  • Age 19 or 24: Goodbye qualifying child. At this age, your child is no longer eligible for the $500 dependent credit as a qualifying child, unless they are a full-time student. In that case, they stay eligible for another four years (until age 24). Once they cease to be a qualifying child, they may still be eligible for the credit as a qualified relative, but more restrictions (such as earned income) are in place.

Tax move: If your child is going to college, claim one of the higher education credits for qualified college expenses. For instance, the maximum American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) is $2,500 per student per year, although it is subject to a phaseout. Once they are out of school, call to discuss your situation. We can run through the dependency tests to determine if you can still take the $500 dependent credit.

Give us a call to set-up an appointment to go over your tax situation and to plan ahead.

All taxpayers should check their withholding ASAP

6/12/2019

Picture
All taxpayers should check their withholding – also known as doing a Paycheck Checkup – as soon as possible. They should do a checkup even if they did one last year.

By checking their withholding, taxpayers can make sure enough is being taken out of their paychecks or other income to cover the tax owed. Here are some things taxpayers should know about withholding and why checking it is important:

  • Taxpayers should check their withholding as early in the year as possible. If someone still has not done a Paycheck Checkup, there’s still time to get their withholding on track. They should do a checkup ASAP.

  • Taxpayers should also check their withholding when life changes occur. These changes include things like:
    • Marriage or divorce
    • Birth or adoption of a child
    • Purchase of a home
    • Retirement
    • Chapter 11 bankruptcy
    • New job or loss of job

  • Some taxable income is not subject to withholding. People with this income who also have income from a job may want to adjust the amount of tax their employer withholds from their paycheck. This includes income from things like:
    • Interest
    • Dividends
    • Capital gains
    • Self-employment and gig economy income
    • IRA distributions, including certain Roth IRAs

  • Some life changes might affect a taxpayer’s itemized deductions or tax credits. The taxpayer should check their withholding if they experience changes to their:
    • Medical expenses
    • Taxes
    • Interest expense
    • Gifts to charity
    • Dependent care expenses
    • Education credit
    • Child tax credit
    • Earned income tax credit

The best way for taxpayers to check their withholding is to use the Withholding Calculator on IRS.gov.

Reminder: Second Quarter Estimated Taxes Due

6/10/2019

Picture
If you have not already done so, now is the time to review your tax situation and make an estimated quarterly tax payment using Form 1040-ES. The second quarter due date is now here.

Due date: Monday, June 17th 2019

Remember, you are required to withhold at least 90 percent of your current tax obligation or 100 percent of last year's obligation.*

A quick look at last year's tax return and a projection of this year's obligation can help determine if a payment is necessary. Here are some other things to consider:

  • Avoid an underpayment penalty. If you do not have proper tax withholdings during the year, you could be subject to an underpayment penalty. The penalty can occur if you do not have proper withholdings throughout the year. A quick payment at the end of the year may not help avoid the underpayment penalty.

  • W-2 withholdings have special treatment. A W-2 withholding payment can be made at any time during the year and be treated as if it was made throughout the year. If you do not have enough to pay the estimated quarterly payment now, you may be able to adjust your W-2 withholdings to make up the difference.

  • Self-employed need to account for FICA taxes. Remember to account for the need to pay your Social Security and Medicare taxes as well. Creating and funding a savings account for this purpose can help avoid the cash flow hit each quarter when you pay your estimated taxes.

  • Don't forget state obligations. With the exception of a few states, you are often also required to make estimated state tax payments if you're required to do so for your federal taxes. Consider conducting a review of your state obligations to ensure you meet these quarterly estimated tax payments as well.

*If your income is over $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separate), you must pay 110 percent of last year's tax obligation to be safe from an underpayment penalty.

Give us a call to set-up an appointment to go over your 2019 estimated tax liability!

2020 Health Savings Account Limits

6/3/2019

New contribution limits are on the horizon
The savings limits for the ever-popular health savings accounts (HSA) are now set for 2020. The new limits are outlined here with current year amounts noted for comparison.

What is an HSA?
An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account whose funds can be used to pay qualified health care costs for you, your spouse and your dependents. The account is a great way to pay for qualified health care costs with pre-tax dollars. In fact any investment gains on your funds are also tax-free as long as they are used to pay for qualified medical, dental or vision expenses. Unused funds may be carried over from one year to the next. To qualify for this tax-advantaged account you must be enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

The limits

  • For people with self-only coverage under a high-deductible plan, the limit is $3,550.
  • For those with family coverage under a high-deductible plan, the limit is $7,100.

These are increases of $50 and $100, respectively, from 2019 contribution limits. The catch-up contribution for people age 55 and older remain at $1,000.

Note: An HDHP plan has minimum deductible requirements that are typically higher than traditional health insurance. To qualify for an HSA, your coverage must have out-of-pocket payment limits in line with the maximums noted above.

Not sure what an HSA is all about? Please call to discuss whether an HSA is right for you.
